Roma run out 3-1 winners against Perugia

Roma ran out 3-1 winners against Perugia in the club’s first official friendly of pre-season on Wednesday night.

Following a series of training matches at Trigoria, Paulo Fonseca’s side stepped up their preparations for the new campaign with a trip to the Serie B side – with Edin Dzeko and Gianluca Mancini (twice) scoring the goals in a comfortable triumph.

Pietro Iemmello had halved the deficit in fortuitous fashion shortly before the break, but the hosts could not do anything to prevent the Giallorossi victory after Mancini’s late clincher.

Fonseca once again opted to heavily rotate his side – making nine changes at the break, as only Mancini played the entirety of the game.

It took just 12 minutes for the team he had selected to start to break the deadlock, as Dzeko finished smartly after good work from Diego Perotti. When Mancini reacted brilliantly to turn home a defensive error at a corner barely 10 minutes later, it looked like the visitors were on course for a thumping win.

But a deflected strike from Iemmello changed the momentum of the game, in a first half that was played in a combative, competitive fashion.

The second half changes perhaps disrupted that rhythm – although Roma continued to look likely to get a third goal, with only goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario’s heroics denying Patrik Schick on a number of occasions in the second half.

In the end it fell to Mancini to kill the contest, with a close-range header from a corner in injury time.

The Giallorossi will be back at the Stadio Renato Curi in a week; this time as hosts, as Basque side Athletic Club visit.

Prior to that, however, there is Saturday’s trip to face French side Lille – as Fonseca looks to learn more about how his side is shaping up ahead of the season’s start at the end of August.

Roma XI to face Perugia: Mirante; Florenzi, Mancini, Fazio, Spinazzola; Diawara, Pellegrini; Cengiz, Zaniolo, Perotti; Dzeko.

Second half XI: Pau Lopez; Karsdorp, Mancini, J. Jesus, Kolarov; Cristante, Nzonzi; Cengiz (Zaniolo), Antonucci, Kluivert; Schick.
