AS Roma attends the inauguration of the Carlo Mazzone sports centre in Municipio XII

On 19 March, the 88th anniversary of Carlo Mazzone’s birth, a facility dedicated to the unforgettable Roman coach and AS Roma legend was inaugurated in the Bravetta district. Mazzone managed the Giallorossi from 1993 to 1996 under the presidency of Franco Sensi and took his first steps as a footballer on the very ground where the new pitch is.

The renovation of the centre in Via dei Capasso, a municipally owned property, was arranged by Municipio XII. Management for the first year – through an interim tender – was entrusted to the historic Alba Roma 1907, the successor of the team that contributed to the foundation of AS Roma in 1927.

The pitch dedicated to Mazzone now features a 42mm synthetic turf, refurbished dressing rooms and fully accessible stands. It will be available to local schools for events aimed at engaging the community.

Alongside AS Roma’s Chief Football Operating Officer Maurizio Lombardo, the inauguration ceremony was attended by Carlo Mazzone’s family members, the Mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri, the President of Municipio XII Elio Tomassetti, the Mayor of Ascoli Piceno Marco Fioravanti and several former AS Roma players who were close to Mazzone, including Massimiliano Cappioli, Fabio Petruzzi, Sebino Nela, and Franco Peccenini.

“I bring greetings from the Friedkin family and the club, which is always present on such occasions,” said Lombardo, who presented Carlo Mazzone’s grandson with a personalised AS Roma jersey. “I never had the chance to work with him, but it feels as though I knew him because everyone speaks so highly of him. He went down in the history books of Roma and other clubs in our country. I’d like to thank the institutions that made this possible, as it helps a club like Roma by bringing passion, emotion and added value to these young players who now have the opportunity to develop in a place like this.”
