Played at the Stadio Flaminio in the year of Italia ’90, this was a hard-fought but deserved win for the Giallorossi. It was settled when Giuseppe Giannini's cross was flapped into the path of Rudi Voeller by Lazio keeper Fernando Orsi, the German nodding home before embarking on a celebratory jog in front of the delirious Roma fans.
Nils Liedholm's team went into this as reigning Italian champions and won the game with two quality goals. Sebastiano Nela headed in the first before Roberto Pruzzo wrapped up the points with a well-taken angled finish, with both assists served up by an on-song Bruno Conti. This was the derby of the famous giant 'TI AMO' (I love you) tifo displayed by the Curva Sud. Two words to sum up the Giallorossi faithful's relationship with their team.
Alfredo Foni's Roma whitewashed Lazio in the first derby of the season, Pedro Manfredini crushing the Biancocelesti resistance with a hat-trick inside the first 37 minutes and Alberto Orlando rounding out the scoring with a fourth late on. The Giallorossi ended the season fifth in Serie A but won the Fairs Cup, while Lazio were relegated to Serie B.
The first-ever Rome Derby was won by a low strike from Rodolfo Volk which sent the huge numbers of visiting Giallorossi fans into raptures. A newspaper report from the time describes the scene: “Nine tenths of the huge crowd at the Stadio della Rondinella were waving yellow-and-red flags. You could quite objectively say that this was an away game for Lazio.”
Roma sealed second place and their spot in the Champions League group stage with a crucial derby victory last May, Juan Iturbe and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa getting the all-important goals. A magnificent sunny afternoon ended with the Giallorossi celebrating the win in front of the Curva Sud.
This was the match that enabled Luciano Spalletti's side to set a new Serie A record of 11 straight wins. Rodrigo Taddei and Alberto Aquilani netted in either half to hand Roma the three points. The team celebrated at the final whistle with 'Forza Capitano' shirts while carrying Francesco Totti triumphantly around the Olimpico after the captain had suffered a serious ankle injury against Empoli a few days before then.
Abel Balbo, Massimiliano Cappioli and Daniel Fonseca earned Carlo Mazzone's men a memorable success against a Lazio side that everyone had down as favourites before kick-off. The post-match celebrations with the fans – after Roma's first derby win in four years – with Mazzone and club captain Giuseppe Giannini became the stuff of legends.
A match-winning display by a superlative Mirko Vucinic helped Roma come from behind to claim local bragging rights. The Biancocelesti took the lead through Tommaso Rocchi before Sergio Floccari wasted the chance to double their advantage from 12 yards. It was three huge points for Claudio Ranieri's side which enabled them to take the title race with league leaders Inter down to the wire.
The away derby in the season of our third Scudetto was decided by a Paolo Negro own goal that sent the Giallorossi faithful wild with delight – winning such a crucial derby because of a mishap by a Lazio player was all the sweeter. Victory over the previous season's title winners strengthened the belief of Fabio Capello's side... and six months down the line they celebrated properly by taking the Scudetto off their rivals' hands.
A scintillating performance by Roma saw them dominate from the first minute to the last against a Lazio side chock-full of star players yet so utterly outclassed by the Giallorossi. Vincenzo Montella and Francesco Totti led the charge, l'Aeroplanino helping himself to no fewer than four goals – a record in the derby – while Il Capitano capped it all off with a sumptuous chipped finish before running over to the Sud to show off his '6 unica' (You're unique) T-shirt.”
