Keep Life Onside: second edition of the campaign to promote safe, responsible driving

AS Roma is set to continue teaming up with Automobile Club Roma and Toyota to promote safe and responsible driving among young people in the capital.

Following the success of the first edition of the Tieni in gioco la vita (Keep Life Onside) campaign, held in March 2024 and involving over 100 final-year students from three Roma-based schools with Roma Primavera’s entire squad as project ambassadors, the second set of theory and practical lessons kicked off on 12 November, extending to three other schools in the city.

This initiative, created by AS Roma in collaboration with Automobile Club Roma and with Toyota’s support, continues to address the tragic toll of road accident victims annually on the capital’s roads.

Distraction while driving and ignoring road signs account for over half of all cases, with speeding ranking top. For this reason, students from IIS Giorgi-Woolf, ITIS Galileo Galilei, and ITC Vincenzo Arangio Ruiz schools, alongside the players from the two Roma Primavera squads as credible ambassadors and advocates of the safety message, attended interactive theory lessons on safe driving practices held in the Council Hall, kindly provided by the Municipio IX in the capital. During the two-hour theory lesson, Valerio Vella, the Head of ACI Ready2Go, covered key concepts for safe driving and the prevention of road accidents, such as speed limits, active and passive safety, ADAS devices and advice to stay fully focused at the wheel.

Subsequently, under the guidance of ACI Ready2Go trainers and using the parking areas offered by Euroma2 Shopping Centre, students engaged in a series of safe driving exercises, applying a proven and particularly effective hands-on method for learning the correct rules of the road.

Toyota and KINTO, AS Roma’s Mobility Service Provider, also provided four iconic vehicles from the Toyota range, ideal for young drivers and new licence holders: two Aygo X and two Yaris Cross models, the latter equipped with full hybrid technology. Participants holding a driving licence or learner’s permit could experience simulated hazardous scenarios in which they applied the lessons learned in the classroom.

The course’s aims were presented to students and to the Roma Primavera players (who were accompanied by the Head of Women’s Football at AS Roma, Betty Bavagnoli, and Team Manager of the men’s side, Manuel Marzocca) by Municipio IX President Titti Di Salvo, School Councillor Paola Angelucci, Automobile Club Roma Director Riccardo Alemanno and the Business Developer and Communication Specialist at Toyota, Massimiliano Rossi. SCCI’s Marketing Director Lorenzo Maria Zanchi performed the role for Euroma2.

Also present was journalist Luca Valdiserri, father of 18-year-old Francesco, who was tragically killed in October 2022 by an out-of-control vehicle while walking with friends on the pavement in Via Cristoforo Colombo.

In addition to sharing his perspective as both a journalist and a grieving father, Valdiserri helped present the cheque derived from the fund established by the club in memory of his son Francesco, to support the running of these courses in the three schools in the coming academic year.

AS Roma reaffirms its commitment to the well-being of the community in collaboration with local institutions, focusing on key areas for proactive, solidarity-driven intervention by the club and its supporters, acting as a true social platform.
