Club mourns passing of Giosuè Stucchi

Tall and powerful, Stucchi made 178 appearances for the club between 1954 and 1961, including five in the club’s successful Inter-Cities Fairs Cup campaign.

Given his size and physique, Stucchi was something of an outlier during his era – one of the few defenders with the power to cope with the likes of John Charles and Gunnar Nordahl. But it was his intangible qualities – the courage, the aggression, the refusal to ever give up – that endeared him most to supporters.

Stucchi signed for Roma over the interest of Inter Milan, although a knee problem picked up during his medical led to a clause being inserted into his contract, reducing his salary should he fail to make 20 appearances for the club.

Instead he made 29, becoming a crucial part of the Roma backline in the process.

Few expected Stucchi to become such a beloved part of the Roma side, but then his date of birth – March 13 – is one he shares with some of the greatest names the club has ever seen: Bruno Conti, Sebino Nela Giancarlo De Sisti, Nicolas Lombardo.

“[Others] went forward in search of glory and stayed back to defend,” Stucchi would say about his role, but that sacrifice was never overlooked.

Stucchi also captained the side on four occasions, although a serious injury suffered in March 1959 would leave him sidelined for six months and continue to cause him problems even after his return.

Nevertheless, he played his role in that run to a European trophy in the Fairs Cup, an achievement for which he was justifiably proud – keeping a miniature version of the trophy in the office at his home.

There was nothing else miniature about him, though.

Rest in peace, Giosuè, a giant of man in body and spirit.

Anche il presidente Renato Sacerdoti che un giorno, dopo un'amichevole in cui il pubblico accenna a una contestazione, esce dal campo al suo fianco guardando i tifosi, come a dire: "Se fischiate lui, fischiate anche me".

Nel febbraio del 1958, alla vigilia di una partita che avrebbe visto assenti Ghiggia e Giuliano, cioè capitano e vice, disse al presidente Anacleto Gianni: "Via, volete che vada via dalla Roma senza aver indossato neanche una volta la fascia di capitano? E cosa racconterò a mio figlio?". Ed è capitano, meritatamente, per quattro partite.

Il 22 marzo 1959 subisce un grave infortunio durante la partita contro il Vicenza. Una brutta entrata di un avversario gli causa la rottura della rotula e l'intervento chirurgico è inevitabile. Rientra sei mesi dopo, senza riuscire però a trovare la continuità di un tempo.

Totalizza comunque 5 presenze nella Coppa delle Fiere vinta dalla Roma e di cui è sempre andato orgoglioso, al punto di conservarne una miniatura nel salotto di casa sua. Ma Giosuè Stucchi non è stato per niente una miniatura, è stato un gigante, nel fisico e nell'animo.
