Roma 0-0 Sassuolo: Controversial home draw

Roma drew 0-0 with Sassuolo on Sunday afternoon, finishing the game feeling somewhat aggrieved - despite playing more than half the game with 10 men.

Roma drew 0-0 with Sassuolo on Sunday afternoon, finishing the game feeling somewhat aggrieved - despite playing more than half the contest with 10 men.

Pedro's dismissal - after picking up a second yellow card - just before half-time left the Giallorossi facing an uphill battle, although they thought they had taken the lead soon after, as Henrikh Mkhitaryan lashed home after an incisive counter-attack.

But that goal was subsequently chalked off by the referee (following a consultation with VAR) for a perceived foul in the build-up, a decision that saw coach Paulo Fonseca shown a red card at half-time for protesting it vehemently.

In the second half the Giallorossi continued to press and probe for a match-winning goal, with Edin Dzeko hitting the post and Mkhitaryan going close on more than one occasion.

Before the end it was Sassuolo's turn to think they had won the game, however, as substitute Lukas Haraslin curled home from distance - only for VAR to flag an offside in the build-up.

The game therefore finished goalless, leaving both sides to reflect on how the afternoon could have panned out very differently.

Roma are back in action on Thursday - they face CSKA Sofia in the final group game of this season's Europa League.
