Top 10: Roma players who scored on their debut!

We take a look at the last 10 players to enjoy an especially memorable first game for the Giallorossi...

To score on your debut for a new club is the dream of any player - and one Henrikh Mkhitaryan experienced when he took to the field for the first time as a Roma player, on 15 September 2019.

A late addition in the summer transfer window that year, the Armenian started and scored in an emphatic Stadio Olimpico win against Sassuolo - immediately endearing himself to the supporters in the process.

Micki became the 61st player in club history to enjoy such a sparkling first game - although he couldn't quite match up with Luigi Ossoinach, the first player to mark his Giallorossi debut with a hat-trick (in the club record 9-0 win over Cremonese back in 1929).

Eight years later, Danilo Michelini would match that remarkable feat in a 4-0 win over Fiorentina on the opening day of that season.

Subsequently, the likes of Carletto Galli (1951, against Fanfulla), Roberto Pruzzo (1978, against Ascoli) and Francesco Vincenzi (1983, against Rimini) would all notch debut braces to get off to a great start at their new club.

Here, however, are the last 10 players to score on their debut for Roma - culminating in Micki's strike this time last year.

    2003-04: Cristian Chivu

A notable debut goal for so many reasons - not least of all the fact Francesco Totti deferred to a new teammate over a dangerous free-kick. At home to Brescia, the captain left the ball for defender Chivu to show what he could do from a set-piece.

Chivu repaid that show of faith with a brilliant strike: the ball clattering off the woodwork but crossing the line. It was the second of five goals the Giallorossi would score that afternoon.

    2003-04: John Carew

John Carew did not enjoy the best of spells in the Italian capital, lasting just a solitary season at the club, although he did at least enjoy a positive start. From the penalty spot, the big Norwegian converted calmly to confirm a big 5-0 win against Brescia.

    2005-06: Shabani Nonda

The 2005-06 season started with an away trip to face Reggina, at the Stadio Granillo down south. It was an easy enough start for the Giallorossi - who won 3-0 thanks to goals from Mancini, Daniele De Rossi and, at the death, Shabani Nonda - who had only come on 19 minutes ealier to make his debut.

Totti fired in the cross, Nonda muscled in ahead of the defender... and three points were secured with three goals.

    2009-10: Filippo Scardina

How to explain the story of Filippo Scardina? A product of the Primavera, he made his first team debut as a 17-year-old back in December 2009 - coming on as a late substitute in the final group game of the Europa League that season, away to CSKA Sofia.

Given the subject of this list it will be no surprise to learn that Scardina marked the moment with a goal too, converting from Simone Perrotta's assist to make it 3-0. Yet it would turn out to be both his first and last game in a Roma shirt, and he would go on to a nomadic career throughout Italy's lower tiers.

    2011-12: Erik Lamela

He was only 19, he was making his debut... yet Erik Lamela's goal against Palermo was perhaps one of the most eagerly-anticipated and exuberantly celebrated goals by a Roma player in recent times.

The Argentine summer signing arrived to great hope and fanfare, and took just seven minutes to justify some of that - faking to cross before instead burying a curling shot inside the far corner. A star was born.

    2012-13: Nico Lopez

It's the stuff of dreams: Roma, 2-1 down at home to Catania, withdraw Totti and instead put on a 19-year-old debutant by the name of Nico Lopez, who.... only goes on to score the injury-time equaliser.

The Uruguayan latched onto Michael Bradley's deep ball into the box and, on the volley, lashed home. That would be about as good as it got for Lopez, however, who made a further six appearances that season but never established himself at the club.

    2013-14: Adem Ljajic

A September date with Hellas Verona at the Olimpico, with Rudi Garcia's side looking to build on what had been an encouraging opening day victory over Livorno. Maicon and Miralem Pjanic put the hosts ahead before Ljajic, a second half replacement for Florenzi, killed the game off with a fine right-footed finish of his own.

It took him just 12 minutes to make the impact.

    2015-16: Stephan El Shaarawy

Arriving at the club after an aggressive January transfer window that also saw Diego Perotti drafted in, El Shaarawy - fresh off a disappointing loan spell at AS Monaco - wasted no time in winning over the Roma fans.

With a low ball in from Erwin Zukanovic (another new arrival that month), El Shaarawy produced a spinning backheel that flummoxed the Frosinone defence and ensured it was a dream start for the winger.

    2017-18: Aleksandar Kolarov

A tough start to the season on paper: Away to Atalanta, in the summer heat too. But Roma navigated the challenge thanks to a new face, as Aleksandar Kolarov marked his arrival with the decisive goal.

It would be a harbinger of things to come: Kolarov going under the wall from a close-range free-kick to get both himself and his team off the mark for the season. It would be the first of many free-kicks scored by the Serbian over the next three seasons.

    2018-19 Henrikh Mkhitaryan

The latest to join a fairly exclusive club, Mkhitaryan was in sparkling form as Roma clinched their first win over the Paulo Fonseca era at the Olimpico.

Bryan Cristante opened the scoring on the day, with Dzeko doubling the advantage inside the first 20 minutes. And then there was Micki: the No. 77 latching onto Lorenzo Pellegrini's astute assist to make it 3-0 with barely a quarter of the game gone.

Another debut goalscorer - only time will tell who ends up joining him on the list and becomes No. 62...
