The international airline will become the team’s Main Global Partner, just as they currently are for the men’s side, in an agreement that signifies the expansion of the relationship between the two organisations – and underlines the commitment of both to the growth, development and sustainability of women’s football.
“We are honoured to extend our partnership with Qatar Airways, and thank them for their dedication to supporting women’s football,” said club CEO Guido Fienga.
“We are proud to reach such a significant milestone with Qatar Airways during this difficult time.
“The current pandemic has caused unprecedented challenges for the entire football community; however, we at AS Roma continue working tirelessly in support of our teams.”
Since the side’s inauguration in 2018, AS Roma Women have quickly established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in Italian football: finishing in the top-four and reaching the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia in both campaigns to date.
With women’s football enjoying a surge in interest following the 2019 Women’s World Cup, the new agreement with Qatar Airways underlines the ongoing commitment to the sport – despite the recent Covid-19 pandemic forcing the 2019-20 season to be suspended before its completion.
“Qatar Airways is delighted to sponsor the AS Roma Women’s team as we see women’s football going from strength to strength around the world,” said Qatar Airways Group CEO, Mr. Akbar Al Baker.
“We are proud of our diverse portfolio of global sport sponsorships and are totally committed to supporting the women’s game, reflecting our belief in the power that sport has in bringing people together.”
Qatar Airways became Roma’s Main Global Partner in 2018. They also have agreements with major international football clubs including the likes of Boca Juniors, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich – while they are an official FIFA partner for the upcoming 2022 World Cup.
Qatar Airways Senior Vice President Marketing and Corporate Communications, Ms. Salam Al Shawa, added: “We are thrilled to welcome the AS Roma Women’s team to the Qatar Airways football family and look forward to seeing the players proudly sporting our logo on their shirts.
"Women’s sport is experiencing unprecedented growth in viewership, attendance and fan following and we are excited at the opportunities this partnership presents the airline.”
In the running for a Women’s Champions League spot before the 2019-20 season was cancelled, Roma Women have a number of renowed players within their ranks – including Brazil star Andressa Alves and Italy internationals Elisa Bartoli, Manuela Giugliano, Annamaria Serturini and Agnese Bonfantini.
