Gallery: Cup adventure ends for Roma Women

The Giallorosse, tied at 1-1 after the first leg of the semi-final, went to Florence with hopes of progressing to the final - but were denied by La Viola, thanks to goals in either half from Tatiana Bonetti and Alice Parisi.

Betty Bavagnoli's side went into the game knowing they needed to score in order to have any chance of progressing from the tie - but in truth they were limited in their chances, with captain Elisa Bartoli and defender Federica Di Criscio perhaps presented with the best openings.

"We tried everything but we could not get a breakthrough," defender Angelica Soffia said.

"But we will learn from this experience and use it to come back stronger next year."

Fiorentina will now progress to face Juventus in the final, looking to win the competition for the third time in success.

“We showed a bit of a lack of experience at the highest level today," Bavagnoli said afterwards.

"Especially going away from home, facing a group of players that are fighting for the title this season, that have played in the Champions League before.

“I want to congratulate Fiorentina, but we tried our best and we go out with our heads high. This experience will help us in the future, to keep on improving.”

Bonetti's early strike did not manifestly change the task for Roma - who still needed to score to force extra-time - but Parisi's goal moments into the second half was a decisive blow.

“Fiorentina showed today that they know how to increase the rhythm and the intensity in a game both sides want to dominate, and in midfield we struggled at times," the coach added.

"When we tried to take possession we could not find the right balls in the final third. After the break we were perhaps a bit too aggressive early on – but when you look at the quality and experience they have it’s not a coincidence they are fighting for titles again.”

Roma will meet Fiorentina once again on Saturday to bring a close to their inaugural Serie A campaign - with La Viola still harbouring hopes of lifting the title.

The Giallorosse, meanwhile, have only pride to play for, having already been confirmed in fourth spot.

“I believe it has been a positive season, I certainly applaud the girls for everything they’ve done," Bavagnoli added.

"I thank them, and also I thank the club for investing in this project – which remains a long-term one. We are starting to look to the future now, assessing things professionally and reflecting on where we can improve.”
