Zukanovic: the first Roma interview

Having gone through all the necessary steps following his loan move to the capital, Ervin Zukanovic sat down with Roma TV to chat about the club's appeal to him, outline his objectives for the second half of the season and send a message to Giallorossi fans...

Welcome to Rome Ervin, how's your first day at Trigoria been?

"It's been wonderful seeing friends and meeting my new team-mates."

What are your emotions as a new Giallorossi player?

"Every footballer wants to play at a high level for a great team. I've managed to achieve that and it's great for me – I'm very happy."

Roma weren't the only club interested in your signature – how did the negotiations go?

"I've been very stressed over the last few days and there's been a lot of confusion. I wanted to come here because Roma are a fantastic club, so my intention was to try to land this move."

Did the presence of Edin Dzeko and Miralem Pjanic in the squad have an influence?

"It had a big influence as I play with both of them for the national team. When I arrived they gave me a lot of advice. It's easy to have friends like them who can help you out a lot. However, even after one day I've noticed that they're all great guys in the changing room."

You've played in various positions – which role do you prefer?

"I'm a defender who can play in any of the three defensive positions. I've featured at full-back and centre-back in Italy but it's up to the coach to decide."

Luciano Spalletti has used a back-three and a back-four so far – are you familiar with both set-ups?

"I've played for a coach who'd opt for three or four at the back, so it won't be a surprise for me."

What are your best attributes?

"I don't like talking about myself, I prefer to let my football do the talking."

What are your objectives for the second half of the season?

"To try to pick up as many points as possible and climb as far up the league table as we can."

Do you know that Roma fans are already sharing your goal against Lazio on social media? It's a unique rivalry here.

"The Rome Derby is a fantastic thing and I know the fans are very passionate about it. But I'm concentrated and I want to do well. Let's see what happens."

You'll have the opportunity to play in a huge tournament like the Champions League for Roma.

"Our aim is to feature in the Champions League every year. We need to play well to make sure we're participating in the competition next season as well."

You've played for many clubs already in your career – how do you view the move to Roma?

"I've often changed the team I play for because I've wanted to make little steps forward and I'm happy with this approach. I'm turning 29 next month and mentally I'm ready for the next step at Roma."

Do you want to send a message to Giallorossi fans?

"As I've just said, I don't like talking about myself and making bold statements that much. The only thing that I can say is that I will try to play well for the team and the club."
