Fonseca previews Spezia meeting

Coach Paulo Fonseca knows Spezia will give nothing away for free, when the two sides face off in the Coppa Italia this week.

Coach Paulo Fonseca knows Spezia will give nothing away for free when the two sides face off in the Coppa Italia this week.

On Monday afternoon, in lieu of a pre-match press conference, the boss answered a few short questions about Tuesday's game - which gets underway at 21:15 local time.

Spezia are also the Giallorossi's Serie A opponents at the weekend, adding an extra layer of intrigue to proceedings.

Here's what Fonseca had to say about the first of those contests...

Three days on from the derby defeat, what is the mood like among the squad heading into tomorrow’s Coppa Italia game?

“We were all very disappointed after Friday’s game – especially for our fans, who deserved to see a much better performance. We can’t change what happened, but we can start again with the determination that something like that won’t happen again in future. The team needs to understand that we can only change our future by changing our attitude during games. As I said, we are most disappointed about letting down our fans.”

It will be the first game in the Coppa Italia this season – what are your targets in the competition?

“Our target is to win the game tomorrow, a tough game against a really good opponent.”

What sort of challenges are you expecting in this match?

“Spezia are a well-organised side, who play a slightly different style, but always with the aim of having the ball. They are really determined and disciplined, especially defensively. It will be a tough game.”
