Pallotta’s donation was matched by Roma Cares, the club’s foundation, meaning the new GoFundMe campaign already boasts €100,000 of a €500,000 target.
With more than 10,000 cases and counting, Italy has both the second-highest reported death toll and number of confirmed infected cases of Covid-19 in the world, behind only China.
In fact, with over 820 fatalities, Italy’s death toll is significantly higher than the next three hardest-hit nations combined – Iran, South Korea and Spain.
Now, AS Roma and Roma Cares want to help raise much-needed funds to help Lazzaro Spallanzani Hospital in Rome deal with the crisis.
“This is a global issue but Italy is really suffering right now,” said AS Roma president Jim Pallotta.
"In sport we always talk about heroes but the real heroes right now are the doctors and nurses working every waking hour to save the lives of those infected. Right now, Lazzaro Spallanzani Hospital in Rome needs our help.
“Myself and everyone at AS Roma, and at Roma Cares, is proud to support the doctors and nurses at Lazzaro Spallanzani Hospital and if you can donate even €5, it can make a big difference.”
The hospital in Rome is the epicenter of the battle in Italy to save the lives of those infected by the disease all over the country. Amongst the first cases treated by the hospital were the two Chinese tourists who contracted the virus in their homeland, and who are now recovering.
Given the national emergency, the money we are hoping to raise with the help of you, the public, will be used to purchase clinical diagnostic equipment for the hospital to improve infected patient care and essential supplies to facilitate the work of the doctors and nurses treating the virus.
