The first edition of the Coppa Italia took place in 1922. This year is the 68th instalment of the competition.

Roma have won the Coppa Italia nine times, in 1964, 1969, 1980, 1981, 1984, 1986, 1991, 2007 and 2008. The club has been a beaten finalist on a further nine occasions, in 1937 against Genoa, 1941 against Venezia, 1975 (league-style format), 1993 against Torino, 2003 against AC Milan, 2005, 2006 and 2010 against Inter and 2013 against Lazio. Roma are the second most successful team in the Coppa Italia, behind Juventus’ ten wins.

Roma’s first-ever match in the Coppa Italia took place on 26 December 1935 in a one-legged last-32 match away at Foggia. The Giallorossi ran out 4-0 winners that day thanks to goals from Andrea Gadaldi and Otello Trombetta and an Otello Subinaghi brace. Roma’s first home match in the cup came on 6 January 1927 as they defeated Triestina by two goals to one courtesy of goals from Domenico D’Alberto and Pietro Serantoni.

Roma have recorded their biggest Coppa Italia winning margin of five goals on four occasions: 6-1 against Pontedera on 24 December 1939 (hat-tricks from Amedeo Amadei and Miguel Angel Panto), 6-1 against Fanfulla in 1941 (braces from Amadei and Panto plus goals from Aristide Coscia and Mario De Grassi), 5-0 against Napoli on 13 November 1963 (three from Alberto Orlando, three from Pedro Manfredini), 5-0 against Verona on 1 September 1982 (Roberto Pruzzo hat-trick, goals from Maurizio Iorio and Herbert Prohaska). The first three matches were last-16 clashes, while the fourth was part of the group-stage format used that year.

No Giallorossi man has scored more Coppa Italia goals than Roberto Pruzzo, with the striker netting 20 times in the cup.

The first one-leg Coppa Italia final played at the Stadio Olimpico was in the 2007-08 season. Roma were the winners that year, beating Inter 2-1 on 24 May 2008 thanks to goals from Philippe Mexes and Simone Perrotta.

There are two former Roma players in the top ten of the overall Coppa Italia appearances charts: Pietro Vierchowod (third place with 116 appearances) and Fuasto Salsano (eighth with 102 appearances).

Bruno Conti and Fausto Salsano are Roma’s representatives in the top ten in terms of most Coppa Italia wins by a single player. Conti won the cup five times, all with Roma. Salsano also tasted cup glory on five occasions, but four of those came during his time with Sampdoria with only one coming for the Giallorossi.

Roma’s last Coppa Italia match was back on 3 February 2015 as they lost 2-0 to Fiorentina in the quarter finals.
