Club's Valentine's Day blood donation campaign a success

Roma fans came out in their droves despite the rain on Friday 14 February to answer the club's call and donate blood for young patients at the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS children's oncology ward.

The 'Insieme alla Roma per donare la vita' (Together with Roma to give life) initiative was organised by AS Roma with the Municipality of Rome and the City Council administration in Piazza del Campidoglio, aided by several volunteer groups: Francesco Olgiati Blood Donors, AVIS Comunale Roma UDR and the Franco e Maria Sensi association.

This simple act of love – performed on Valentine's Day – will augment the blood transfusion supplies for the local area and help young patients with oncological and onco-haematological diseases.

“Since the Friedkin family took over, the club has brought back the old custom of promoting initiatives that encourage fans to donate blood,” explained AS Roma Chief Football Operating Officer Maurizio Lombardo. “The decision to reinstate the same slogan used in the past means we can continue this wonderful tradition, which demonstrates the spirit of service and solidarity within the Giallorossi community."

Lombardo then took the opportunity to join the other donors and give some of his own blood to the cause.

“I would like to thank AS Roma and all the partners for running this campaign at the Campidoglio,” said City Council president Svetlana Celli, accompanied by Roma Club Campidoglio president Federico Rocca for the occasion. “We are pleased to support and promote this initiative as it's an invaluable opportunity to raise awareness about a generous gesture that can give hope to people going through a tough time."

Also attending the event was former club president Rosella Sensi, who during her time at the helm ran many similar initiatives with the same objective and the same motto. Alongside her were her sisters Maria Cristina and Silvia, representing the Franco e Maria Sensi association, which operates in the field of blood donation.

“I am grateful to AS Roma and the municipality because, as a family and as an association, we've always understood how important it is to give blood,” Rosella Sensi commented. “We need a lot of donors and days like this show you how generous and sensitive Romans are. I hope there are many more initiatives like this.”

AVIS Comunale Roma UDR director prof. Raffaele Tartaglione was also pleased with the success of the morning. He was responsible for coordinating the proceedings from a health perspective, together with prof. Luciana Teofili, director of the Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS blood transfusion unit, which will receive the blood bags.

“Unfortunately we are not self-sufficient so we need blood on a daily basis, especially for our paediatric patients and our preterm newborns,” prof. Teofili explained. “On their behalf I would like to thank all the people who offered their contribution this morning - it will help raise further awareness about this important act of solidarity.”
