It is the latest initiative in the club's Food for the Community project, following the introduction of a scheme to recover excess food from the hospitality areas at the Stadio Olimpico after the Giallorossi's home games.
On 27 January the club – represented by Stephan El Shaarawy – donated the weekly harvest from the Orto Urbano at the training ground in Trigoria to the Caritas Solidarity Emporium in Via Casilina Vecchia. The garden extends across an area of around 3,000 square metres next to the training pitches, providing more than two tons of vegetables per year.
The donation is AS Roma's way of offering concrete aid to the Solidarity Emporium, which is essentially a supermarket for families in certified hardship. The families can obtain the foodstuffs they need by using a special points card provided by Caritas for free. The club's delivery of over 50 kilos of fresh vegetables will help improve the quality of what the emporium can offer.
“We players know that we can find the produce from our urban vegetable garden at the table every time we eat in Trigoria,” Stephan El Shaarawy explained when the food delivery was made. “Now we know that we can share that harvest with people who are not as fortunate as us. Initiatives like this make us even prouder to be part of the big AS Roma family.”
“People don't realise that food poverty is on the rise in Rome due to all the poorly paid and cash-in-hand jobs and the effect of inflation on wages, salaries and pensions,” commented Rome Caritas director Giustino Trincia. “This initiative – which we are very grateful to be a part of – is important because it's a practical solidarity offering for people who are less well off, often single mothers. It's also an example of how sport can help raise awareness and get athletes and fans involved.”
Over the coming months, the club will make further donations to four other Solidarity Emporiums in the local area which, together, have benefitted over 12,000 families in food poverty, helping more than 40,000 people in total.
