Here's what he had to say...
What's happening?
“We did everything wrong tonight. Before today we'd been very focused for seven matches and produced good performances. Tonight we got everything wrong – in our play and in our approach. It was as if we completely forgot the last 40 days of work. I didn't expect it because we'd been playing well and looking solid. But we got it all wrong tonight.”
You made a double substitution after 30 minutes. Did you not like what you were seeing or was it to shake the team up?
“I was very upset. We played really well against Dynamo Kyiv three days ago. Today I saw very little focus, very little attention. I saw lots of bad things. I didn't like our attitude, especially defensively. I decided to change things, both to shake them up and to give them a signal. But for a technical reason: I saw things I didn't like. Not just from those two [Bryan Cristante and Angelino], but from the whole team.
“We'd conceded five goals in seven games, giving away very few chances, having a lot of the ball, and trying to improve in attack, which is where we needed to do better to pick up more points in these games. Tonight we got everything – the whole team did. There are no excuses. There's very little to say right now.”
Do you see the right qualities from a defensive point of view for your type of football?
“If a team only concedes five goals in seven matches, albeit with a few big mistakes in certain situations, and concedes very few shots, that means they can do a great job. We conceded some ridiculous goals today. If a team performs well in seven matches, it means you have players with certain qualities. They lacked focus today. You get games like this. It happens even to great teams – take Atalanta, for example. Hopefully we got it all out of our system today. We have to go again and do better.”
Do you feel your position is at risk?
“You know how football works. We've worked superbly for 40 days and we threw it all away today. That's how I feel. The solidity, the football, the youngsters growing and producing great performances, the older lads getting back to their past level... we threw it all away today. It saddens me a lot. But you know how football works. It's up to others to decide. We have to work. I still think we've done a lot of good things in these 40 days. I didn't expect this today.”
Was taking off Cristante a strong signal for the dressing room?
“We don't have a huge squad here and we need everyone involved. Everyone must be part of it, young and old. I don't need to send out signals in that sense. I look at the performances: who trains well and who plays well. I chose Bryan because up until now he'd played well. He gives us stability and balance. Today he had a bad game. Roma can't lose players today, young or old. We need to get the best out of everyone.”
