Club receives “Friends of Cooperation” prize for AS Roma for Special and Locanda dei Girasoli projects

AS Roma was recognised by Legacoop on 5 July for having used the cooperative model as a driver for social inclusion and sustainability through two of the many projects that the club supports to benefit the community.

In doing so, Legacoop wanted to give concrete meaning to the International Day of Cooperatives, which has been celebrated by cooperatives all over the world on the first Saturday in July since 1923 and was officially proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1995. This year the theme was “Cooperatives Building a Better Future for All”.

The “Amici della cooperazione” [Friends of Cooperation] prize was awarded to AS Roma on ‘Coops Day’ - held at the headquarters of Legacoop – as recognition of the club’s commitment to a more inclusive society by using sport as a tool for integration and promoting the work carried out by cooperatives every day. Particular reference was made to the project that led to the formation of the AS ROMA for Special team that play in FIGC’s Paralympic and Experimental Football division. The team was created in collaboration with the social cooperative Meta, which takes charge of selecting players with intellectual and relational disabilities for the squad.

The awarding of the prize also recognised AS Roma’s decision to work with the “Girasoli a lavoro” social cooperative that, through the Locanda dei Girasoli organisation, gives jobs to people with Down’s Syndrome as catering staff in the hospitality areas at Stadio Olimpico.

Simone Gamberini, president of Legacoop, said, “These are concrete actions that have produced tangible results. They are an important communicative tool in conveying the idea of a more inclusive, fair, and equal society, particularly to young people. These are founding values of the cooperative model”.

The prize is a ceramic plate that was handcrafted by a cooperative of artists and craftsmen who took over their company while it was in the process of moving production overseas.
