Lukaku: "We will now wait for them in Rome"

Romelu Lukaku spoke to the media following his goal that helped Roma draw 1-1 with Feyenoord in the first leg of the Europa League play-offs.

Here's what the Belgian striker had to say...

How did the game go tonight?

"We wanted to win today, Feyenoord are a very strong team. In the possession phase, they make some very good plays. We played a good game. We had chances, and they had some as well, but a draw in Rotterdam is a good result. We will now wait for them in Rome."

You spoke about Feyenoord's strength, now tell us about Roma's strength.

"We didn't give up until the end. In the possession phase, we showed good intentions through the movements of Dybala, Karsdorp, and Pellegrini, who found the right spaces in the final third. Zalewski played an interesting game. Those who came in made a difference, which means that the team is always united to do their best for Roma. This is important."

How are you doing mentally? In a short period of time, you can see a transformed team playing a style of football that also favours the strikers.

“Yes, it's been difficult lately, as it always is for a striker who hasn't scored in a while. However, I have continued to work and create space behind for Paulo and Lorenzo, as the coach has asked for.

“I was lucky to score today. To be honest, I hit it a little badly, but the movement was good. It's unfortunate we didn't win. We had the opportunity to do so, but we are growing. The season is still long, and we will be waiting for them in Rome for the rematch."

What does De Rossi specifically ask of you? And as for the future, it is not up to you, but what do you want?

"The coach wants us to play and have personality with the ball. He always gives us ideas on how to make space for players who can get into the final third, with lot players arriving into the box. In the possession phase, we still need to work. We're doing what he says, but it takes time.

"In terms of the future, I'm focused on Roma. Talking about it now makes no sense. I have to help the team win, and then we'll see at the end of the season."

It's a case of thinking about the past, right?

"Yes, at the end of the day, the life of a footballer is like that. I've been playing for 15 years, and there are both positive and negative moment. I'm living a dream. I'm playing in Serie A with excellent players and growing as a footballer. This gives me satisfaction, and I want to do everything I can to help Roma win."
