Saki Kumagai is a top player on the global stage, as shown by her place in the Guardian’s list of the 100 best female footballers in 2022 and an honours’ list including five Champions League successes with Olympique Lyonnais. Kumagai also has a World Cup medal in her collection, having been crowned on the global stage with Japan back in 2011. In the last two seasons she played her football in Germany for Bayern Munich, where she recently won the league title.
“I’m thrilled to join Roma and can’t wait to play for this club,” she stated.
“I’m grateful to Roma for showing their faith in me and I’ll give my all to repay the confidence shown in me and meet the team’s expectations. I want to make history for this club.”
The midfielder is set to captain Japan at the upcoming World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, which will be her fourth tournament, having lifted the trophy in 2011 and reached the final in 2015. Kumagai also has Olympic silver in her collection from 2012.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Saki Kumagai to the club,” said the Head of Women’s Football, Betty Bavagnoli. “She’s a player who’s made history with Japan as their captain.
“We’re so pleased and proud to have Saki here as she wants to bring her qualities to our plans going forward as a club. She’s always set an example for all women in our sport and she’ll make a key contribution to our development pathway.”
Welcome to Roma, Saki!
