Men's and women's teams set for prestigious Barcelona double-header

The club is pleased to confirm that its first team sides will face Barcelona in the prestigious Joan Gamper Trophy on Saturday 6 August.

The traditional pre-season event at the Camp Nou will see two high-profile matches played back-to-back, with the clubs' respective women's teams going head-to-head at 17:30 local time, before the men take the field later in the evening, at 21:00.

This is the second time the Gamper has followed such a format, after fellow Italian side Juventus were the guests last summer.

This will be the second time the Giallorossi have played in the Gamper, after being invited as the guests of the Spanish giants back in 2015. On that occasion, Barcelona's men's team ran out 3-0 winners.

It will be the first time the two male first teams have faced off since they met in Dallas in the summer of 2018, as part of the International Champions Cup. The Giallorossi ran out 4-2 winners in that match in Texas, in front of a bumper crowd of almost 55,000 people.

It will be the first time the two sides have met on European soil since the unforgettable Champions League quarter-final of 2018, where Roma won 3-0 at the Stadio Olimpico - thanks to goals from Edin Dzeko, Daniele De Rossi and Kostas Manolas - to complete an historic comeback.

The two sides have faced each other a total of six times in the Champions League, with a perfectly matched record of two wins apiece.

In contrast, the Gamper event will be the stage for the first-ever meeting between Roma and Barcelona's respective women's teams.

While Barcelona - reigning La Liga champions and runners-up in the Champions League last season - have cemented themselves at the top of the women's game over the past decade, Roma Women have been making rapid progress of their own since the team's formation in the summer of 2018.

In the four years since, the Giallorosse have established themselves as one of the strongest sides in Serie A, as a squad comprising numerous international players has won the Coppa Italia in 2021 and reached the final once again last season.

A second-placed finish in the league last season - their best-ever - means coach Alessandro Spugna's side will play in the Champions League for the first time next season, with the contest against Barcelona thus offering an invaluable test as they prepare to face some of Europe's finest teams on a more regular basis.
