Spugna extends contract with Roma Women

The club is delighted to announce that Roma Women coach Alessandro Spugna has agreed a new one-year contract with the club.

Spugna will lead the Giallorosse into what promises to be a landmark 2022-23 campaign for the team, after joining Head of Women's Football Betty Bavagnoli on Friday to put pen-to-paper on an extension that runs until 30 June 2023.

The former Empoli coach, who joined the club last summer, successfully guided the Giallorosse to a second place finish in Serie A – their highest ever – in his debut season, which in turn means the team will play in the Champions League for the first time next term.

Spugna also guided the side to the final of the Coppa Italia, falling agonisingly short of a remarkable defence of the trophy they won in 2021.

“I am really happy to be able to continue my journey with this club,” Spugna said.

“I feel the support from everyone here, and for that above all I have to thank Betty Bavagnoli.

“I now have the chance to continue to work for a club with significant ambitions that wants to keep improving, to stay at the top of Italian football and begin a new adventure in the Champions League.

“Next season is going to be long and demanding, and we will need to be ready to give everything.”

Spugna’s side showed particular improvement in the second half of the 2021-22 campaign, picking up more points than any other side in the Italian top-flight – while the Giallorosse also finished the season with a wider range of goalscorers than any other side.

“The decision to renew Alessandro’s contract was the natural conclusion of everything we saw throughout the season,” said Bavagnoli.

“He demonstrated the clear vision he has about the game and showed he knows how to guide this team in the pursuit of big targets.

“Our hope is that he continues in that vein, trying to lead the team to take further steps forward both in Italy and in Europe.”
