First Interview: Shomurodov determined to take this chance

Before joining up with his new teammates and beginning training, we sat down with our newest signing to discuss his feelings after making the move to the Italian capital.

It's official: Eldor Shomurodov is now an AS Roma player.

The Uzbekistan international becomes the first player from his nation to represent the Giallorossi, after completing his move from fellow Serie A side Genoa on Monday afternoon.

Before joining up with his new teammates and beginning training with José Mourinho, we sat down with Shomurodov to discuss his feelings after making the move to the Italian capital.

Eldor Shomurodov, you sit here as a new Roma player. What does that feel like?

“First of all, I am definitely excited. It's a huge step for me. I will try to showcase my game and make the fans happy.”

You join the club after a very positive campaign at Genoa, your first season in Serie A…

“Yes. It was my first season but I tried to... I tried to show what I can do. Some things I did well and perhaps others not so much - and I know that. But still, I'd say I was happy with my season overall.”

In the second half of the season you really seem to have improved, in terms of both your performances and your statistics. What was behind that improvement, do you think?

“First of all, it was my first season and I guess I needed some time to adapt. So I think that's the main reason.

"Later on, I started getting used to the speed of the games, the team and the way other teams defend. And I think because of that I performed much better at the end. I already knew what to do and how to play.”

What has struck you most about Serie A?

“First and foremost, what's struck me about Serie A is the quality of play. The level of the team, of the players that I played with. And second - the speed and the excitement of the game.”

Compared to your time with Russian side FC Rostov, how much do you think you have changed and improved?

“I think it's difficult for me to assess how much I've improved. I think the fans that watch the games, the spectators, would be better equipped to make that evaluation.

"But, every year, when I start making an impact and helping the team gain results I gain more confidence - that's for sure.”

What are your targets here at Roma?

“I would like, first of all, to help my team to win trophies. To overcome challenges too. I will do everything I can in that regard. I want to do my very best and keep improving.”

You have shown in the past that you are capable of playing anywhere across the frontline. Which role do you prefer?

“If I'm honest, when you're at the front, in attack, it's always better to attack. It doesn't matter where, I can always switch positions with wingers or the central players. I'm just very comfortable attacking.”

A lot of clubs were interested in you – why did you choose Roma?

"First and foremost, Roma are one of the best teams in Italy. And there are many positive aspects that attracted me. Many good things: I saw how the fans support the team, how the games go. I used to watch a lot of Roma matches, so I know a bit about it.

"It all got decided very quickly. They were very eager to get it signed and I think they acted very quickly. So that was positive too. And now I'm here, of course.

"Another reason is that I always try to aim high. So that's also very important for me, to take on that next challenge.”

You will become the first Uzbek player to represent Roma – how proud are you to be blazing a trail for your country?

“Yes, I'm incredibly proud to represent my country. I know how much people support me... I knew this when I moved to Genoa too. They cheered me on and I could tell.

“Their support will be even stronger now as I'll be playing for such a big club. So it really is a huge honour.”

And finally – is there a message you want to send to the fans?

“What I'd like to say is … well, I'd like to give my warmest regards to everyone. Keep supporting the team and believing in us! We'll do everything we can to bring you happiness!”
