Vergine will begin his new role on July 1.
“Continuing to improve and enhance the youth sector has always been one of the main goals we’ve had as we restructure the sporting department,” said Tiago Pinto, the club’s General Manager.
“To oversee that we have chosen someone with a vast amount of experience in junior football in Italy, and an incredible knowledge of the game.
“Vincenzo fits perfectly with the ambitious targets the club has with regards to the development of our young players, both on and off the pitch; a crucial element as we look to rebuild a strong homegrown, Romanista identity from the roots of our academy.”
Vergine was previously responsible for heading up the youth sector at Lecce between 1998 and 2006, before joining Fiorentina that summer.
He quickly progressed to become the head of the academy setup at La Viola, ultimately leaving the club in the summer of 2019.
“I am proud to be given the opportunity to work for a club with such a great tradition within Italian football, and a club that has such a great track record of developing young players,” Vergine said.
“That constant pursuit of excellence, along with the great ambitions of both the ownership and the club’s hierarchy, makes this challenge even more exciting.
“I would like to thank them all for the opportunity they have given me.”
