Spinazzola 'in the best form of his career'

After another impressive performance against Bologna on Sunday afternoon, full-back Leonardo Spinazzola believes he is currently playing the best football of his career.

The Italy international was once again a Man of the Match contender following the 5-1 win at the Stadio Dall'Ara, as he provided the assist for the opening goal of the game - before going on to provide a constant threat from the left flank, even nearly scoring a goal himself.

After a start to life in the Italian capital that was disrupted frequently by injury problems, the 27-year-old has been an almost ever-present in Paulo Fonseca's side since the resumption of football following the Covid-19 lockdown.

“I have always believed in myself,” Spinazzola said.

“Last season I was playing in a role where I couldn’t really express myself to the very best of my abilities. Now I’m in the best form of my career.

"I hope this continues for a long time. It’s been seven months, but I hope to do even better especially with the Euros coming up.

"It’s a shame about the disallowed goal, I don’t know how far offside I was. I still need to improve my shooting with my right foot.”

Asked why he has suddenly been able to find consistency in both his fitness and his performance, Spinazzola put it down to a variety of factors.

“Something’s changed personally, I think,” he said.

“I have a new dentist, I’ve sorted my teeth, my bite. And then there are other things too: I do more exercises each day to strengthen the muscles, to improve my posture. I’ve changed everything a little bit. Thanks to all those changes, now I feel like in games I can keep going even in the 90th minute."

Back to winning ways, Roma have three more games in 2020 to go into the New Year with real momentum behind them.

"We are a good side, we know each other much better compared to last season," Spinazzola added.

"We have a better understanding. Whoever comes into the side, they can do well. We know we are fighting with other big sides, but we won’t give up.

"Let’s see if we can pick up as many points as possible in the three games before the Christmas break. They will be crucial.”
