Nils Liedholm's Roma, who had been competing towards the top of Serie A in the previous years, headed to Cagliari to send out an immediate signal of intent on the first day. A 3-1 win with goals by Paolo Faccini and Maurizio Iorio coupled with an own goal by Sandro Loi kicked off the team's charge towards the title.
We look back at some of the key moments along the way through some unforgettable photos and videos.

It all began with a Paolo Faccini header at the Stadio Sant-Elia, the first of 47 Giallorossi goals during the campaign. Another headed by the forward eight months later was the title-clincher.

On 12 December 1982 in the 12th game of the season, Roma beat Inter 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico. Falcao's free-kick caught Ivano Bordon by surprise and sent the Olimpico faithful into raptures, with Iorio grabbing the second goal as the Giallorossi strengthened their title push.
Bruno Conti and Carlo Ancelotti leave the pitch. This was possibly the most difficult moment of the season, with Juventus completing the double over Roma thanks to a 2-1 victory on 6 March 1983. Brio's goal in the 86th minute dragged the Vecchia Signora to within three points of the league leaders, with Liedholm's charges facing a tricky trip to a Pisa side that had beaten Inter at San Siro.
Seven days after the home loss at the hands of Juventus, Roma bounced back in Pisa, with goals by Falcao and Agostino Di Bartolomei keeping the team's lead over the Bianconeri intact. The Brazilian's celebration after scoring lived long in the memory of the Roma faithful, as he rolled up his left sleeve and ended up in Aldo Maldera's arms.
What does a photo of Torino v Juventus have to do with Roma's Scudetto-winning campaign? It matters because while Liedholm's troops drew 2-2 in Florence on 27 March 1983, something incredible occurred in the Derby della Mole. After going 2-0 down, Torino turned the scoreline around in 124 seconds through goals by Giuseppe Dossena, Alessandro Bonesso and Fortunato Torrisi. With just three games remaining, back when it was two points for a win, Roma had a four-point advantage over Juventus and the Scudetto was almost within reach.
Roma could smell the trophy. A win over Avellino combined with Juventus falling to defeat against Inter would do the trick. The Bianconeri, however, staged a comeback from 3-1 down to clinch a 3-3 draw and delay the inevitable for another week. Roma did their part by beating Avellino 2-0, with Falcao and Di Bartolomei getting on the scoresheet. There was a memorable hug between Agostino and Ancelotti that was captured by a photographer.

Goals by Falcao and Di Bartolomei sent the home crowd wild. A giant Scudetto could be seen on the terraces. The title was just one step away.
8 May 1983, Stadio Luigi Ferraris. Roberto Pruzzo's header in the 1-1 stalemate with Genoa secured Roma's second Italian league title.
President Dino Viola received the Capitoline Wolf from the Mayor of Rome, Ugo Vetere, for winning the Scudetto. The presentation took place ahead of the match against Torino on 15 May 1983 on the final day of the campaign which the hosts won 3-1. The president's project was completed and Roma got their hands on the trophy.
