The 20-year-old, who made his debut for Roma against Juventus at the end of September, made his first start for Albania against Kazakhstan, keeping a clean sheet too in an eventual 0-0 draw.
The result in the UEFA Nations League game means all four sides in the group remain tied on four points, with Belarus and Lithuania the other opponents.
Posting afterwards on Instagram, Kumbulla said: "Delighted to make my first start for my country, and to play in the UEFA Nations League for the first time."
He added: "A good result that keeps us on track to reach our targets. Now we need to focus on the next game, because we want to do even better."
