Villar: I think Fonseca will be a great coach for me

After completing his move to Roma on Thursday morning, midfielder Gonzalo Villar sat down with Roma TV to give his first interview as a member of the Giallorossi.

The 21-year-old joins the club from Spanish side Elche CF.

A member of Spain's Under-21 side, Villar is a ball-playing central midfielder with plenty of room to grow.

Welcome to Roma, Gonzalo? What are your initial feelings?

“Thank you! My first impressions are all great. I’m joining a massive club, one of the best in Italian football. I’m really happy right now.”

What are your targets here, your first time playing abroad?

“It’ll be a great challenge for me. I’m coming to a new country, a beautiful country. I can’t wait to get started with my teammates and to show what I am capable of doing.”

What are your attributes as a player?

“I think I am a central midfielder that always wants to be on the ball - or ready to receive it. I'm able to offer different passing options and help out teammates. I can bring the ball out, break the opposition press. I hope that my attributes suit this side well and I can’t wait to show the coach what I can do in that context.”

What has coach Fonseca said to you so far?

“I spoke to the coach, who told me the confidence he has in me. He told me that he likes the way I play on the pitch, but that I need to work hard to adapt to this new challenge. He made a strong impression and I’m confident he’ll be a great coach for me.”

Did you follow Roma when you were in Spain? What was your first day around the club like?

“I’ve known about Roma since I was a kid, I followed their progress in the league and in the Champions League. The training centre is amazing and this is an incredible, historic city – one I hope to get to know well as soon as possible so I can really settle in well. I’m excited by the possibilities at this club and in this city.”

What are your targets at international level?

“I have had the chance to play with the Under-21s on the last two occasions. The coach believes in me, I just need to keep working hard – and this is a great chance for me to show what I can do and keep progressing with the national team too.”
