Roma 1-1 Lazio: Spoils shared despite dominant display

Roma ended Lazio's winning streak on Sunday but will nevertheless be disappointed not to have come away with more, following a 1-1 draw in the Derby della Capitale.

Edin Dzeko gave the Giallorossi the lead at the Stadio Olimpico - his 99th goal for the club - midway through the first half, but a bizarre mix-up in the box enabled Francesco Acerbi to equalise soon after.

Paulo Fonseca's side had countless second half chances to take the lead once more but were denied at every turn; with Dzeko in particular being thwarted more than once by Thomas Strakosha.

In truth Roma will perhaps wonder how they didn't win the game, with VAR overturning a second half penalty initially awarded for a foul on Justin Kluivert in the box, and Lorenzo Pellegrini also smashing a beautiful strike against the far post.

Despite the two sides coming into the match in rather different veins of form, it was the Giallorossi who controlled play from the start - only occasionally having to deal with some counter-attacking forays from the Lazio forwards.

Dzeko eventually broke the deadlock, as he jumped early to catch out Strakosha and flick Bryan Cristante's tantalising cross into the unguarded net.

But the Lazio goalkeeper would then frustrate the Bosnian at every turn, denying him both his 100th goal for the club and, as it would turn out, a potential match-winner.

Lazio had equalised soon after his opener, as Acerbi tapped home following a mix-up involving Roma goalkeeper Pau Lopez.

Roma, confident on the ball and determined in their attacking moves, pushed for a winner right up until the final moments - but in the end were forced to settle for a share of the points.

Fonseca's side are back in action on Saturday, as they travel to face Sassuolo.
