Perotti: We need to change our attitude

Diego Perotti admitted Roma had perhaps taken things a bit too lightly on Thursday, despite reaching the last-32 of the Europa League with a 2-2 draw against Wolfsberg.

The Giallorossi got the draw they needed to guarantee their place in Monday's knockout stage draw - thanks to a goal and assist from Perotti - but one more goal for the visitors would have seen the side crash out of the competition.

Instead it was Borussia Monchengladbach who were the shock casualties of Group J, as Istanbul Basaksehir topped the group with a victory in Germany.

Here's what Perotti had to say after the game.

Did you expect this?

“I didn’t expect Borussia Monchengladbach would be knocked out. These are dangerous games, you can start to think they are already won. Wolfsberg, and rightfully so, played like they could still get through. We did not play well but we need to look forward now, we through to the next round and we are now thinking about Sunday [against SPAL].

Why do you think the performance dropped?

“We didn’t have the right attitude, maybe we underestimated the match. They pressured us throughout the game and we made some mistakes. We need to improve, if we want to go far then there are a lot of areas we need to improve.”

Is it a problem of mentality?

“I don’t know if I can explain it. These sort of games you can play in thinking they will be easy, and then the game doesn’t pan out that way. We are not a side that can allow ourselves to underestimate anyone. We need to be humble and aware of the fact that today we risked going out of the competition – which happened to Borussia. We need to be more prepared.”

Is it fair to say, however, that despite the issues in qualifying you stayed united as a squad?

“You can’t say otherwise. Once we realised we were in a bit of danger we all put in 100 per cent – maybe it came a bit late but I don’t have any doubts about the focus and desire of my teammates. Nevertheless, these sort of games we need to take on with a different attitude.”
