Coach Paulo Fonseca’s visit to the Bambino Gesu children’s hospital on Monday afternoon was just the start of a series of similar events, as players followed the boss’s lead and made a number of appearances at other hospitals, schools, churches and homes around the Italian capital.
In total there have been seven events. On Monday, midfielders Amadou Diawara and Jordan Veretout followed Fonseca’s lead at the San Camillo hospital, while Alessandro Florenzi met students at the Tacito Guarneschi school.
On Tuesday four further events took place: with Pau Lopez and Javier Pastore joined by two Lazio players for a shared visit to the Umberto I Children’s Hospital. The quartet handed out gifts to the young patients on the hospital’s oncology, emergency and surgery wards.
Elsewhere at the same time, Edin Dzeko and Leonardo Spinazzola visited another department at the Bambino Gesu hospital, while Mirko Antonucci, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Nicolo Zaniolo met young members of the congregation at the Santa Maria Madre del Redentore church in Tor Bella Monaca.
Finally, defender Gianluca Mancini made a visit to Casa Famiglia Capitano Ultimo – a local care home.
With these series of visits, Roma has tried to continue to deliver on its repeated aim to be an active and present member of the local community, acknowledging and assisting with the everyday issues many have to contend with.
