Fonseca expecting attitude correction against SPAL

Coach Paulo Fonseca held his traditional pre-match press conference on Saturday, looking ahead to Sunday's game against SPAL.

The Giallorossi's final game at the Stadio Olimpico of 2019 gets underway at 18:00 local time.

Here's what the boss had to say going into the contest...

On Thursday you said the problem was the players' attitude. Do you fear the same problem tomorrow as you're playing the team that's bottom of the league?

“SPAL are a good side – one of the best in the league as far as defensive organisation goes. They're a tough side to play against and I think my players have understood that.”

Are you considering playing Lorenzo Pellegrini deeper or is he too important for you in the hole?

“He's very important for us playing in the hole at the moment. I'm not thinking of changing that.”

What's going on with Cengiz Under?

“I don't want to talk about individuals but he needs to improve in lots of areas.”

After the last match you said some players didn't deserve to play. Have you seen the response you wanted since then? Might some of them play again tomorrow?

“Probably, as we don't have that many options now. Some of them might have to play tomorrow.”

Roma seem to have this tendency to underestimate the opposition – it's something that happened in previous years too. Why do you think the team lacked humility on Thursday?

“I don't want to talk about the last match. I didn't like our attitude and I've already said that. I've spoken to the lads and we've dealt with it. There have only been two matches where we got our attitude wrong – against Sampdoria and Wolfsberg. Tomorrow is a different game and I expect the team to display the attitude we normally see.”

How is Justin Kluivert? Is he fit enough to play?

“Kluivert has been training with us the last few days but I can see he's not quite right. We don't want to take any risks with him.”

Did you feel you had Gianluca Petrachi's backing when you expressed your disappointment after the last match?

“I don't need that sort of support from the sporting director. When I see something I don't like I come out and say it myself. I don't need backing for that sort of thing.”

On Thursday the problem seemed to be with the second balls and the long balls. Given that SPAL play a similar kind of football, have you worked on anything particular to deal with that tomorrow?

“They're two totally different matches. We've worked on second balls and lots of other things. Tomorrow will be a tough game. SPAL are very strong defensively.”

Is Juan Jesus still in your thoughts? Or has Mert Cetin moved ahead of him in the pecking order?

“We'll see tomorrow. They're two options to consider. One of the two will definitely play.”

    Do you like Andrea Petagna?

“He's a very strong, physical striker. He's a good player.”
