Facts and Figures: Our history with Porto

Monday's Champions League last-16 draw handed Roma a tough tie against current Portuguese league leaders Porto.

The two sides have a limited history in direct competition - here's what you need to know about our impending opponents for a place in the quarter-finals.

    Everything says Porto

Roma have played Porto four times in competitive European competition... and haven't won one of them yet. Two draws and two defeats (one of each in the two ties the sides have played) means Porto have only good memories of this match-up.

    Past meetings

In both ties between these two sides Porto progressed: the first time the clubs met came in the 1981-82 Cup Winners' Cup, before more recently Porto won in a play-off for the 2016-17 Champions League group stage.

    Goals, goals, goals

In those four previous meetings Roma have scored just once, and conceded six in return.

    Champions League precedents?

Roma and Porto have never faced each other in the Champions League proper - just that play-off tie two years ago. On that occasion the Giallorossi drew 1-1 in Portugal, before falling to an eminently forgettable 3-0 defeat at home a week later.

Porto into the knockouts in style

Sergio Conceicao's squad performed better than any other side in the group stages of this competition: progressing as winners of their group with 16 points out of a possible 18. Five wins and one draw is an impressive record - as is the 15 goals they scored (and just six conceded).

    Roma against the Portuguese

Roma have played 16 games against Portuguese opponents in UEFA competition: winning seven, drawing five and losing just four.

    Remembering Sporting...

Roma have actually only faced a Portuguese side once in the Champions League - being drawn with Sporting Lisbon for the 2007-08 group stage. On that occasion Roma won 2-1 at home (Juan and Mirko Vucinic with the goals) and drew 2-2 away (Antonio Cassano and David Pizarro).

    Marega the man for Porto

Moussa Marega has scored five goals for Porto in the Champions League this season - the Malian forward has scored in each of their last five games in the competition.

    Casillas the rock

Iker Casillas, Porto's goalkeeper, is the most experienced Champions League player in history - with 173 games under his belt (and counting). He is only the second player, behind Cristiano Ronaldo, to amass 100 wins in the competition too...

    A friendly chapter

Add in friendlys and non-competitive tournaments, and Roma and Porto have a few more encounters to remember - but the Giallorossi did not win any of those, either. Back in the summer of 1956 the two clubs competed in the Venezuelan President's Cup: drawing 1-1 in the first leg and losing 1-0 in the second more than two weeks later.

More recently, in 2006, the two clubs played in a friendly in Porto: the hosts ran out 1-0 winners on that occasion.
