In a new regular feature, we ask a lifelong Roma fan each week to pick their all-time fantasy AS Roma five-a-side team and we kick off the series with Bren, editor-in-chief of the Chiesa di Totti website...

No. 1: My all-time Roma 5-a-side team

Goalkeeper: Franco Tancredi

"For the man at the back, we’ll opt for the steadying hands of Franco Tancredi, Roma’s most experienced and decorated keeper. Beyond bringing speed, agility and supreme shot stopping prowess to the Roma goal, Tancredi was incredibly consistent, making 258 consecutive appearances at the back between 1980 and 1989. Highlights of Tancredi’s career include the 1982-1983 Scudetto and four Coppa Italia championships."

No. 1: My all-time Roma 5-a-side team

Defender: Aldair

"Five-a-side teams need at least one nominal defender and Roma hasn’t had many better than Aldair. The Brazilian center-back spent 13 years in the Eternal City, chalking up over 400 appearances in the process. An imposing figure at the back, Aldair defied traditional definitions, combining defensive acumen with superb technical skills and an innate ability to build play from the back. He was, in many ways, the perfect defender and the ideal complement to the rest of the men on this list."

No. 1: My all-time Roma 5-a-side team

Midfielder: Bruno Conti

"Admittedly, this was a tough choice between Conti and his former running partner Agostino Di Bartolomei but Conti just gets the nod. During his 18 year stay in the capital, Conti made over 400 appearances in all competitions, helping guide Roma to their 1983 Scudetto, as well as appearances in the 1984 European Cup Final and the 1991 UEFA Cup Final, not to mention five Coppa Italia titles. While Conti only scored 47 goals during his career, his creativity, intelligence and sheer athleticism made him one of the best to ever play for the club."

No. 1: My all-time Roma 5-a-side team

Midfielder: Daniele De Rossi

"Not far behind Totti in team lore is everyone’s favorite combative yet elegant midfielder, the Capitano Futuro, Daniele De Rossi. Five aside or not, someone has to win the ball, someone has to spring the attack, and someone has to make the game-changing tackle, and for nearly 15 years and 500 appearances, that man has been De Rossi. Few players in the game’s history have flashed the same combination of tenacity and technique as the man affectionately known as DDR. De Rossi’s skill, intelligence and unwavering commitment to Roma make him an automatic selection to this team."

No. 1: My all-time Roma 5-a-side team

Striker: Francesco Totti

"Whether we’re talking five-aside or traditional football, any all-time Roma time must start with Francesco Totti, the greatest player to ever don a Roma shirt. Put aside all the highlight reels, the 300 goals, the cheeky lobs and the pin point passes, and Totti would still merit a spot in this squad.

"Throughout his two decades on the pitch, Roma’s #10 has shown a remarkable ability to adapt to the ever-changing tactics, fashions and styles of Italian football. Totti has been the facilitator and the finisher, the wide man and the focal point of attack, earning scores of individual and team accolades along the way. Simply put, there is nothing this man can’t do with a ball at his feet. Any all-time Roma team without him would be a farce, and to top it all off, the Scudetto and World Cup Winner is a born and bred Roman."

No. 1: My all-time Roma 5-a-side team

Coach: Nils Liedholm

"When you’re the manager, results matter. And throughout their 88-year existence, not many men can equal Liedholm’s accomplishments. The Swedish midfielder-turned-manager served four separate stints on the Roma bench, guiding the Giallorossi to the 1982-1983 Scudetto, three Coppa Italia titles (1980, 1981 and 1984) and a runner’s up medal in the 1983-1984 European Cup. Liedholm’s teams were resolute at the back, solid in the middle and clinical up front. He left a legacy Roma managers strive to equal to this very day."
