Rudiger: We're on the right path

Antonio Rudiger says there's a new buzz about Trigoria and feels Roma are heading for better times after a tough period

“I think we're on the right path,” the German international told Roma Radio today. “Luciano Spallettti has done an excellent job since coming in and we're all very focused on doing well. What matters now is winning our next game. I'm sure we can do that with the mentality we've got and morale back up again.”

The 22-year-old, who has so far made 22 appearances and scored one goal for the Giallorossi in his debut season at the club, says he has setted into life at AS Roma now.

“I feel really good at the moment. I found it a bit difficult at the start because it was the first time I'd left Germany to go and play in another country. I feel great now though. I feel at home here.”

You've become something of a fan favourite with the Olimpico faithful.

“I'd like to thank the fans because we haven't been playing well in recent months. The support they showed us in the game against Frosinone was fantastic – it was nice to see that from the fans.”

Where are you happiest playing?

“I'm a centre-back but I can play anywhere really, as long as it helps the team. I'm right-footed but prefer playing on the left because I find I can play the ball more from that side. I often played in that position back in Germany.”

Which player do you try to emulate?

“Jerome Boateng. He's one of the best defenders around at the moment and I've played with him for Germany. He's also a great lad. He's definitely someone I look up to.”

Berlin, Sierra Leone and Rome. You've known quite a mix of different cultures...

“I was born in Berlin, my parents are from Sierra Leone, my first name is Italian and my surname is German! One thing I've taken from Sierra Leone and from my parents is that if you want something in life you have to fight for it. I'm a warrior and I'll always fight. I went to Sierra Leone when I was 15 but I'd like to go back there soon to see how things are going now. It's a country that needs help and I'll try to do what I can in my own small way, but the problems are widescale so they need everyone to help. Not even Barack Obama can solve world hunger by himself so we certainly can't.”

What do you do in your free time?

“You know what? I like going to the zoo. I like lions, tigers and all animals. I've been there three times. And of course I love going out for a meal with friends.”
