12 things you should know about FC Porto

After Friday’s Champions League play-off draw in Nyon pitted Roma against Porto for a place in the group stages, check out these 12 key facts on the Portuguese outfit

1. Porto play their home games at the Estadio do Dragao. Built for the European Championships in 2004, the stadium can hold 50,000 spectators.

2. With 27 league titles under their belt, Porto are the second-most decorated side in Portuguese football after Benfica, who have won the league 35 times.

3. Porto have won 16 Portuguese Cups and 20 Portuguese Super Cups.

4. Porto have won the Champions League on two occasions, in 1986-87 and 2003-04, with the latter coming under the management of Jose Mourinho. The season beforehand, Mourinho had led Porto to their first UEFA Cup triumph. Porto later won the Europa League in 2010-11.

5. Porto finished third in the Portuguese league last season with a total of 74 points from 34 games, behind winners Benfica and runners-up Sporting Lisbon.

6. Porto have faced Italian teams 26 times. Thus far, their record stands at seven wins, eight draws and 11 losses.

7. Roma and Porto played each other in the Round of 16 of the 1981-82 Cup Winners’ Cup, with the Portuguese outfit running out 2-0 winners at home before securing a 0-0 draw at the Stadio Olimpico.

8. Nuno Espirito Santo takes charge of Porto for the 2016-17 season, having managed Valencia until midway through the 2015-16 campaign. A former goalkeeper, he spent time at Porto as a player.

9. Porto’s nickname is the Dragões – the Dragons. The stars from Draco, the dragon constellation, feature on the club’s away kit for 2016-17.

10. Porto are taking part in Europe’s premier club competition for the fifth successive year. However, they’ve only made it further than the group stages in two of those five attempts.

11. Porto have had to contest a Champions League play-off on three occasions (in 2000-01, 2001-02 and 2014-15), making it safely through every time.
