Alisson focused ahead of 'important time' for club and country

Roma goalkeeper Alisson Becker has set his sights on reaching the level of the best goalkeepers in the world, as he prepares for a crucial season as a starter for both club and country.

The goalkeeper is currently away on international duty with Brazil, as they continue their World Cup qualification process with key games against Ecuador and Colombia.

And Alisson is looking to raise his level, with a World Cup emerging on the horizon.

"This is an important time for me," Alisson said. "I have the chance to start for Roma and I am happy to have the same confidence with the national team.

"We will be happy to continue as we have been doing, and arrive in good form ahead of the World Cup in Russia next summer."

Alisson only made his Serie A debut for the Giallorossi this month, having been back-up to Wojciech Szczesny last season. He thanked those with the national team who continued to support him even as he was limited to cup appearances at club level.

"[Great Brazilian goalkeeper] Taffarel has always shown he has faith in me, his backing has been important," Alisson added. "I have talked a little bit with [coach] Tite, but he has always asked me to do everything I can when I play.

"He knew that I was part of Roma's future, that I would get more chances. He simply asked me to find continuity and consistency. I am thankful for the trust he has shown in me."

Now set for regular action over the coming campaign, the 24-year-old is focused on establishing himself as one of the best in his position.

"I hope to do well in the Champions League as well and reach the level of great goalkeepers like [Manuel] Neuer and [Gianluigi] Buffon: they are at the highest level in the game," he said. "I can learn a lot from watching them.

"At the moment I play in the same league as Buffon, a player I've always admired and has been an inspiration for me. I will work very hard to try to reach the same level as the greats: I want to train hard and keep progressing, that is the only way to get there."
