The Spanish side begin their campaign against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico - while Chelsea are in action elsewhere against Qarabag - and Simeone believes qualification for the knockout stages will be a three-horse race.
"Everyone is entitled to their view but I think we have the same chance of qualifying as Roma and Chelsea – all three clubs have very strong squads," Simeone said. "We must focus on playing our game and doing what we enjoy.
"The Champions League is a fantastic competition. I think it's a great achievement to reach the final twice, though obviously the best thing of all would be to win it. It was a wonderful experience and going so far in the Champions League after being absent from the competition for so many years helps lay the groundwork for the future. It gives us reason to keep fighting to win.”
With a tight group expected every game will be important - although Simeone played down suggestions that the game at the Olimpico could set the tone.
For Simeone it will also be an interesting 'homecoming', having represented Lazio as a player.
“Of course [the first game is] important but other times we've lost the first one and then won the second," he said. "Roma are a great team who play good football. I think they can go a long way in this competition.
“We mustn't mix up our feelings with our jobs. I respect Roma and I have fond memories of my time at Lazio but I'm not a big one for talking now. I'm more interested in looking at how Roma play and they play some excellent stuff.
"They have some great players, pacy players and a very strong and skilful midfield unit. That's all I'm thinking about now.”
