The two defenders - who arrived from Manchester United and Chelsea respectively last summer - joined the club on one-year loan deals, and will not take part in the club’s Europa League tie against Sevilla on Thursday.
"We would like to thank Chris and Davide for the professionalism shown this season," said AS Roma CEO Guido Fienga.
"Both showed their dedication and commitment to the club’s project.
“They shared with us every moment, both the positive ones and the difficult ones, and immediately showed great attachment to the Giallorossi colours.”
Smalling made 37 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring three goals.
Zappacosta, who was sidelined for much of the season by a cruciate ligament injury, played nine times for Roma.
"If the conditions are right, we would be honoured to be able to count on them again,” Fienga added.
