"It was important to win tonight," the Spaniard said.

"We knew that it would be a tough game, but we played really well right from the start against a tough side. We dealt with their crosses well. I'm pleased we won and I'm pleased we are through."

He added: "The team put in almost a perfect display. Cluj didn't have even one clear sight of goal.

"It's true that a few players like Leo [Spinazzola] had to play out of position, or others like Juan [Jesus] who aren't playing much, but they played well and showed that the coach can count on them."
