The Giallorossi, up against Antonio Conte's in-form side, dominated possession for large parts of the contest at the Giuseppe Meazza - despite missing goalkeeper Pau Lopez and striker Edin Dzeko from the starting line-up.
A few occasional defensive lapses allowed Inter to create a few chances, but replacement goalkeeper Antonio Mirante was more than equal to both Lautaro Martinez and Matias Vecino.
Roma's best chance perhaps came through Nicolo Zaniolo, although Samir Handanovic was more than equal to the effort.
In truth the visitors created few clear-cut chances of their own, even after a flu-affected Dzeko was introduced in the second half. But they nevertheless impressed with their general control of the game, with Amadou Diawara particularly influential in midfield.
Chris Smalling and Gianluca Mancini enjoyed a real tussle with Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro respectively - and eventually emerged victorious.
The Giallorossi are back in action on Thursday, as they look to secure Europa League qualification against Wolfsberg.
