Fonseca: We showed great character to win this

Read everything the boss had to say in the immediate aftermath of a thrilling 2-1 win in Bologna.

The Giallorossi, down to 10-men for the final stages, took home all three points thanks to an injury-time strike from Edin Dzeko.

It’s now three consecutive wins but you had to show real character to get the three points today. Are you pleased with your players?

“Yes, very much so. First off we deserved the win, because we played well and dominated the entire game. Bologna had a number of counter-attacks in the second half and created a couple of chances, but we deserved the win on account of the character we showed.”

You got a stoppage-time winner today despite being down to ten men. What does that say about the fitness of your team?

“Let’s not forget that we played Istanbul on Thursday as well. It was difficult for the players today, but we’re in very good shape physically.”

Are you aware that results are given greater importance than attractive football in Italy?

“I’ve seen lots of Italian games. We’ve made a few changes here and I think that this way of playing is better suited to the characteristics of the team. Regardless, we want to win every game.”

Edin Dzeko looked absolutely delighted today – it’s quite the turnaround from last season…

“All of the players are happy, not just him. The team is pleased with the result and with how we played. Dzeko is vital to this team – he’s a top player. I’m pleased that Edin has been motivated, enthusiastic and happy from the first day I arrived. He’s very important. I have huge belief in him.”
