Gallery: Roma matches in L’Aquila, where Italo Foschi Museum opens on 7 June

ROMA v GENOA 0-1, L'Aquila, 1951

The Italo Foschi Museum will open in L’Aquila on 7 June, the day Associazione Sportiva Roma was founded back in 1927. The museum will include a reconstruction of the personal study of the club's first president – the setting where AS Roma first came into being.

Ahead of the occasion, we take a look back at some exclusive photos of two occasions when the Giallorossi played in L'Aquila.

The first of these was on 28 March 1951, when the Roma side of coach Pietro Serantoni and president Pier Carlo Restagno played their home game against Genoa on a neutral ground.

The Giallorossi lost the match 1-0 – a result which condemned the club to its first and only relegation – but it went down in Giallorossi history because of the incredible support shown by the fans.

Here are a few photos from the game.

Giallorossi forward Giancarlo Bacci, in the yellow jersey, appears protected by the wall of Roma fans packed into the stadium. On one of the improvised fences, you can see a banner reading “Forza Lupi”.

Roma fans crammed into their section of the stadium, having made the 145-kilometre trip from Roma by coach, car, motorbike and even pushbike. Despite the result of the match – which saw the Giallorossi relegated to Serie B for the first and only time – this day will go down in Roma history as a truly extraordinary example of the fans’ support for their team.

The second match we’ve picked out was a preseason friendly played by Roma at L’Aquila’s Stadio Fattori back on 24 August 1958, the beginning of Anacleto Gianni’s first season as Giallorossi president.

Gunnar Nordahl’s Roma side were coming off the back of a thumping friendly win over Rieti, whose goalkeeper was forced to pick the ball out of the back of the net no less than 12 times. It was a more even affair against the local XI on 24 August, however, with Alberto Orlando, Dino Da Costa, Franco Zaglio, Da Costa again and finally new signing Arne Selmosson scoring in a 5-2 win. Zaglio, another new recruit, was enjoying a great start to life at Roma, having bagged a hat-trick against Rieti from the false nine position.
