Including the Austria Wien match, Roma have played a total of 116 matches in the UEFA Cup and Europa League. The Giallorossi first appeared in the competition back in the 1975-76 season, after Nils Liedholm had guided the club to a third-place finish in Serie A the season before. Roma made 94 appearances in the UEFA Cup and are currently on 22 in the Europa League, making it the European competition the club has appeared in the most.
Roma have scored 201 goals in the UEFA Cup/Europa League. Before the Austria Wien match, the Giallorossi were stuck on 197 goals, but Edin Dzeko’s brace and a goal apiece from Daniele De Rossi and Radja Nainggolan smashed the 200 barrier. Roma’s first goal in the competition was scored by Stefano Pellegrini on 17 September 1975 as Roma beat Dunav Ruse 2-0 at the Stadio Olimpico.
Edin Dzeko’s opener against Austria Wien was his first goal in the UEFA Europa League in 1712 days. The Bosnian striker’s last goal in the competition came in Manchester City’s 4-0 win over Porto back on 22 February 2012. Fast forward to over four years later and Dzeko was contributing two goals in Roma’s 4-2 victory in Austria. Dzeko has scored a total of six goals in the Europa League over the years.
