Another Rome derby awaits on Sunday – the 148th in the Italian top flight and the 74th with the Giallorossi at home.
Ahead of the game, we've delved into the archives and picked out our 10 favourite Roma v Lazio encounters from the past.
“It was worth coming back to Rome for this goal alone – I've rarely experienced a joy that intense before.” That's how Giancarlo De Sisti described the feeling after his match-winning strike at the Olimpico. The midfielder, who had returned to the capital after nine years at Fiorentina, sent the 70,000 crowd into raptures as Nils Liedholm's side brought their cross-town rivals back down to earth after their Scudetto triumph a few months previously.
It wasn't a win but it almost felt like one after a virtuoso second-half display from the captain saw Roma claw back a 2-0 deficit and take home a share of the spoils. The captain's acrobatic second was the cue for one of the most memorable goal celebrations of all time as he immortalised the moment with a selfie in front of the Curva – a true genius even when celebrating.
With the Scudetto shield worn proudly on their chests, Roma handed their rivals another reminder of who ruled the city just a few months after claiming the title. Marco Delvecchio added to his personal derby tally just four minutes after coming off the bench, before Totti made it 2-0 in injury time. Afterwards Fabio Capello described it as a match won with “great grit and determination”.
“That was one of the best feelings of my entire career,” was how Claudio Ranieri began his post-match press conference after a derby won by an unlikely hero in the shape of Marco Cassetti. The defender secured local bragging rights for the Giallorossi when he steered Mirko Vucinic's cross past Fernando Muslera ten minutes from time, before celebrating wildly in front of the Curva Sud.
This was the game when Mancini scored that backheel – one of the finest goals in derby history – from Antonio Cassano's free kick. Less than five minutes later, another Brazilian star, Emerson, sealed the points when he rounded off a Roma counter-attack. A samba night at the Olimpico.
A historic derby in every sense of the word as one of the earliest meetings between the two sides saw Roma record the biggest-ever win margin. Luigi Barbesino's Giallorossi crushed Lazio 5-0 at Camp Testaccio thanks to an Ernesto Tomasi hat-trick and double from Fulvio Bernardini.
A blistering second-half display saw Roma claim derby spoils after going two and a half years without. Federico Balzaretti and Adem Ljajic got the goals that temporarily sent Rudi Garcia's side to the top of the table. Balzaretti was unable to contain his emotion during a memorable celebration in front of the Sud.
“The king of Rome is not dead,” declared one commentator – coining what became an iconic phrase – after Francesco Totti struck down Lazio with this double. The captain first fired in a free kick then slammed home a penalty in stoppage time to give Roma a fifth straight derby triumph, following three Serie A wins and one in the Coppa Italia.
Who could forget the roar that went up when Francesco Totti sealed this 3-1 success in front of the Curva Nord? It capped off a thrilling match dominated by Zdenek Zeman's men, which not only marked Roma's first derby win in close to five years but also knocked Sven-Goran Eriksson's side off their perch as Lazio went on to surrender the title to AC Milan. Marco Delvecchio was the other derby hero with a wonderfully taken first-half brace.
The last derby of the millennium ended with the Giallorossi in festive mood after Fabio Capello's team pummelled Lazio into submission with four goals in a scintillating opening half hour. Vincenzo Montella and Marco Delvecchio helped themselves to a brace apiece.
