Coach Eusebio Di Francesco faced the media on Tuesday afternoon at Stamford Bridge to preview the Champions League clash against Chelsea.
Read everything he had to say about the game...
What do you want to see tomorrow done differently compared to the defeat against Napoli?
"I want a different approach compared to the game against Napoli, because we know tomorrow it will be a different opponent who are also motivated because they lost their last game in the league.
"We will be facing a different set of challenges tomorrow, and I will look at mine squad and it is certain we will have a different approach for the game to be ready for it.”
With the many injuries you have, does it mean it is harder to make the two or three changes a game that you have tried to do so far this season?
"Against Napoli we didn’t do well from the point of view of our first half approach. Overall, however, there was no big difference between the sides that some have spoken about and this should give us strength, considering also that we hit the woodwork twice.
"There is always the option to change things – we have different players and certainly I will switch some things around but I don’t want to reveal that here today. It’s a decision I will make tomorrow.”
In Rome there is a lot of talk about fitness - could you tell us the difference with the preparation you have done compared to previous years? And also the pre-season tour, what you might do different next season...
"I am collaborating with the club's medical staff and the rest of the team and in the end it is my responsibility to make choices. I could look at our opponents and see they have injury problems as well, but you know [Antonio] Conte was here last year as well so it's not always about changing methods.
"At this level injuries can happen, of course we know this. But at the moment I am not thinking about next year, I am just thinking about the here and now."
There has also been talk regarding pressure and concentration. People say that this game is not going to be decisive, so you can maybe afford to lose. In this respect how do you motivate the players?
"I do not read this sort of thing, I’m not interested. I know in the press they are talking about fitness and motivation, but I focus on different things – preparing and focus on the next game. If we are going to improve and grow as a group then we have to always focus on the next game. After the result against Napoli I want us to respond and show our spirit, and I’m sure our players want to show the same thing."
Could you tell us about the condition of [Maxime] Gonalons, particularly going back to the game against Qarabag. What do you think about him and do you think he could play in a game like tomorrow's?
“Yes I definitely think he can play in this sort of the game. In Baku for the first 30 minutes he did really well, did exactly what I wanted him to do, and then after the mistake he lost a bit of confidence which is natural. He is a player who always trains really hard, who works really well with the group, and one difficult 15-minute spell isn’t going to change my opinion of him.”
In Champions League the games are often won by experience. Which qualities do you think you need tomorrow?
"I believe that every player needs three important qualities: physical, technical and psychological. Of course in these sort of games we have to keep the tempo up and run, because as we know in the Champions League every team has great ability - we saw that also against Qarabag.
"We have to use all our physical strength but at the same time also use the other two characteristics if we want to win."
