'Dear Edin...' Amadei's daughter congratulates Dzeko

On Sunday Edin Dzeko drew level with Amedeo Amadei on the club's list of all-time leading goalscorers. Centre-forward of the club's 1941-42 Scudetto, here Amadei's daughter, Maria Grazia, gives her personal reflection on the Bosnian's achievement...

Dear Edin,

I want to congratulate you on scoring 111 goals for Roma. The same number that my father, Amedeo Amadei, scored for the club – and in exactly the same number of games, 234, as well.

It’s an incredible coincidence, but one that makes me very pleased. With your goals you have helped take Roma to great heights. You have helped to decide difficult games in Roma’s favour, just like my father once did.

I like the idea that perhaps you can see something of yourself in Amedeo Amadei. And perhaps that now, in 2020, you too can be considered ‘il fornaretto’ (‘the little baker’ - Amadei’s nickname) of Roma.

My father was a huge Roma fan. He was born with Roma in his heart, and he died with it there too. And I see a lot of him in you, too. Just like him, you don’t play for yourself: you always play for the team.

That’s perhaps why you sometimes don’t manage to score all the goals that you would like to. Because you sacrifice yourself for Roma. Because you give everything for the team.

I hope that you can continue like this. I hope that you can help lead us to the sort of great achievements that all of us as Roma fans have been hoping for in recent years.

Here is why I am not upset to see someone reach Dad as the third greatest Roma goalscorer of all-time. Because Dad would have been delighted to watch you in action. Because he would have been delighted to be able to embrace another prolific Roma centre forward, one just like he was back in his day.

If you love Roma, you always have to hope that some records will eventually be beaten. Because goals, your goals, have always been in service of helping Roma. And nothing matters more than Roma.
