Fazio: We need to focus on executing our gameplan

FAZI

Roma defender Federico Fazio faced the media on Tuesday to preview the side's Champions League quarter-final first leg against Barcelona.

Wednesday's game at the Camp Nou gets underway at 20:45 CEST.

Read what the Argentina international had to say about Lionel Messi, his own form, and more.

As a man who knows Lionel Messi well, how do you stop him?

“I'm not the only one who knows him well – he's the best player in the world and we all see what he's capable of every game. We mustn't concentrate too much on him, though; we have to focus on Barcelona as a whole and on Roma of course. What we do ourselves will be crucial.”

You spent some time with Messi on international duty recently. Did you speak about tomorrow's game at all?

“We didn't say anything in particular. He knows all about Roma and we know all about them. It's going to be a great game.”

Ernesto Valverde said both teams have a 50% chance of going through. Do you agree with that?

“I don't want to put a percentage on it. I see it as a massive match, one we'll go into with great respect for our opponents but also with great enthusiasm and the desire to win. We mustn't look back at what we've done this season but look forward at what we can still achieve.”

Do you see any similarities between Francesco Totti and Andres Iniesta?

“I think they're two players who are similar in some ways and different in others. Totti spent his entire career at Roma and Iniesta his at Barcelona. Francesco is still here helping us with his experience.”

At the start of the season it was said you couldn't play in a four-man defence with a high backline. Do you feel proud to be involved in a game like tomorrow's playing precisely that way?

“What other people think doesn't concern me. I can play both in a back three and a back four – in fact I've nearly always played in a back four. I can play on the left, the right or in the centre. I'm happy to play wherever the coach wants me.”
