AS Roma can confirm that defender Emerson Palmieri has joined Chelsea on a permanent transfer.
The left-back joins the Premier League champions for an initial fee of €20 million. The agreement also includes a number of performance-related clauses, dependent on the achievements of both the English club and the player, worth up to a maximum of an additional €9m.
The 23-year-old joined the Giallorossi from Brazilian club Santos on an initial loan deal in the summer of 2015, in a switch that was subsequently made permanent.
In total he made 47 appearances for the club, scoring two goals - against AC Milan in Serie A on the last day of the 2015-16 season, and then against Villarreal in the knockout phase of last season's Europa League.
Born in Brazil, last year Emerson completed the requirements to secure Italian citizenship - earning a first call-up for Italy’s national team prior to the end of the 2016-17 campaign.
The club wishes Emerson well in his new challenge in the Premier League.
