The agreement also includes an option to make the deal permanent before the start of the 2016-17 season for a fee of €2.8m. This part of the deal is dependent on the fulfilment of certain conditions.
The 28-year-old defender signed with the Giallorossi on Friday having successfully passed his medical in Rome.
Zukanovic spoke to Roma TV shortly after the deal was confirmed: “Everyone dreams of playing for a huge club like Roma and I have managed to achieve that. This is a big milestone in my career and I’m very happy.”
Zukanovic signed for Sampdoria last summer, having turned out for Chievo Verona during the 2014-15 season. The Bosnian spent his footballing youth with Zeljeznicar in his homeland, going on to enjoy spells in Austria, Germany and Belgium before moving to Italy.
“He’s a player with lots of character and mentally he’s very strong,” said Luciano Spalletti of his new defender. “He’s good with the ball at his feet and is able to build the play well.”
